Duvets: Wool or Down?
We’ve been in the market for a new duvet, but have been wondering about wool vs. down. It’s always tough to jump from the comfort of the familiar to something new. So we decided to weigh in on the wool since we know we’re already down for the down.
Here’s the scoop on the pros of wool:
- Naturally hypo-allergenic
- Provides relief from allergies
- Has a natural resistance to dust mites
- Breathes to control body temperature, humidity and comfort
- Transfers moisture away from your skin, to maintain an even body temperature throughout the night
- Warm in the winter and cool in the summer
- Fire resistant
- Renewable, sustainable, 100% natural and biodegradable
Costco sells the Australian wool duvet, so we decided to leap into the unknown and give it a try. For the price, if we don’t like it we can always go back to a down duvet. The fun part is we’re going to wait until we have made our move to the new house for our first sleep under the new wooly delight. I wonder if we’ll be counting sheep in our sleep?
Our bed is a Queen, but we decided to go with a King duvet so it would fall over the edges of the bed better. So that meant a new cover too!
I did a little sourcing and wasn’t loving much, at least not much that also fit our budget :-), until I found this duvet set at Urban Barn… on sale!
It’s called ‘Branch Blossom’ and is actually a soft gray, but that’s hard to tell in the picture. The pattern is stitched on with darker gray stitching in the blossoms – looks like blue here, but it’s really a darker gray, and the branches are black. The leaves are an awesome apple green, but you can’t see that here either. This is definitely not our bed, and I don’t even think this one showcases the duvet set very well, but then again we know it’s all in the details and context is everything. And this was the only picture I could find to show you the cover!
Hubby says he likes it! He says it’s not too flowery – neither of us is really into floral prints for our bedding. We’re excited to get going and see how it looks in our new space. Can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and get started… and then I can take my own pictures to show you once the room is all pulled together.
Have you ever tried a wool duvet? What are your thoughts? Oh, and do you prefer a queen duvet on a queen bed, or are you into putting a king size on instead?
UPDATE: You can catch my follow-up post here where I weigh in after 8 months of giving the wool duvet a try, and let you know if it’s thumbs up or thumbs down in the world of duvets!
