I was reading an article by designer and TV celebrity Jillian Harris on the return of equestrian chic to fashion. She used words like… reclaimed, rustic, neutral… down-to-earth, somewhat structured… to describe this look. And when she laid out the colours… gold, cognac, mustard, weathered denim, cream, brown, navy – that’s when I knew I had the perfect inspiration photo to share.
Looking at this space, there’s nothing literally ‘equestrian’ about it. But equestrian is the feeling I got right away.
And now I know why. It’s all in the colours. This room accents with gold and cognac in the pendants, hints at a touch of mustard in the artwork, and all against a neutral backdrop that’s punctuated with brown in the flooring and cabinetry. In this case, black takes the place of navy with the pendants and the totally fabulous mid-century modern chairs. Did you notice the Cherner chairs at each end of the table? Love them!
And as Jillian suggests for a fab equestrian outfit, the same principles can be applied to equestrian chic interiors: keep it fresh, pair the unexpected, and polish it off.
I think this room nails it!
And isn’t that what great design is all about? A suggestion, a hint that creates a ‘feeling’ you can’t quite put your finger on, but you know it’s there.
Thanks for stopping by!
