Inspiration for a Bookcase Makeover…

Do you remember the bookcase I was painting a week ago?

Well, it all began here.

A boring pine bookcase caught up in yesterday’s look.

And so I decided to give it a makeover.

I used paint that was on hand, which you might remember from herehere, and here.

But I had inspiration to use this colour, other than the fact I had leftover paint to use up! When you piece the inspiration together you can see how the paint colour was a good fit. Besides, turquoise just makes me feel happy, so using it on an office piece makes sense to me!

Here’s a story board of the other pieces involved.

  • Fabric:  used on my bulletin board makeover (here)…
    • Do you remember that it’s hanging right outside the office door?
  • Ocean print:  we bought this print for the office in our last home…
    • And I bet you know by now, the ocean is my favorite place to be.
  • Sand dollar print, ‘Seashore’ by Sarah at Wooden Spoons Edition
    • My first win ever in a giveaway, and it couldn’t be more perfect. Sand dollars remind me of my life growing up on the Charlottes.
  • Woman and telephones print, ‘Postmodernity’ by Nancy Marcus of Marcus Design Inc. on Etsy…
    • My lucky win in another giveaway this past Christmas, and from a very special dlbWEST blogging friend! Don’t you think this is the perfect print to prettify an office space?
  • ‘Thank You’ card:  given to me by my friends, Chris & Leigh Davies of Mid-Island Ink Depot, also clients for a lighting redesign I helped them with…
    • I loved this card when I received it last year, and so it became the inspiration for the wallpaper I picked out.

I found the wallpaper at Home Depot, and it was exactly what I was looking for!

Here’s the bookcase after it was painted.

Now that the paint has dried, we’re ready for the wallpaper application.

And that’s a whole other story, but here’s a sneak peak!

What do you think so far?

  1. Looking forward to the full reveal! {love the paint name: tropicana cabana} How can you not be happy with that colour in your space?!?

    • My daughter has been helping me with the styling… and we have a few different ideas! But she’s got great taste, so it’s a trust, compromise and collaborate deal ;-)

  2. Love the colour you chose Sheila! Looking good!! Will be back to see the full reveal tomorrow!!

  3. Oh it looks amazing Sheila. I just bought wallpaper to do the back of a bookcase as well (also from HD). I actually haven’t looked at it in a while but I think it might be the exact same paper in white and black!! Great minds:)

    • That paper in black and white will be awesome! I can’t wait to see it :-) *Just a heads up – we had to fight a bit with the pattern match on this one, but somehow the gods were with us ;-) Of course, I’m not as patient as my hubby, so that might have had something to do with it!

  4. now I want to see more

Oh yummy! love the colours. I’m selling an old oak bookcase, if it doesn’t sell, maybe I’ll have to do something like this with it!

  6. WOW!!! Looking forward to the big reveal. I love that you posted this, I was just talking to a girlfriend about re doing a bookcase for her daughter’s room and we discussed using wall paper on the inside. Can’t wait to show her your beautiful piece of work!

  7. Thumbs up on the collaborative effort, Sheila & Kaleigh. I love how inspiration can be triggered from the unexpected.

    • Thanks Pauline! Kaleigh is a great little partner. She has good taste and definitely doesn’t hold back with her opinions, thoughts, and ideas… and I always find myself rethinking things as a result. She’s so funny, though. In and out – not into wasting any more time than she’s committed to ;-) Gotta love that though, it keeps the process moving!

  8. Oh that turquoise is amazing and now the wall paper is a touch of bling. Can’t wait to see the reveal.

  9. The story board you put together is great for the office – the colors all work so well together. And I love that your daughter is helping you with her opinions and thoughts – that’s so fun!
