It’s Your Space: Tell Your Story

So what does this mean, a remarkable space that tells your story?

To me, a remarkable space is visually appealing with interest and intrigue, it’s functional, feels good to be in, and most importantly it tells your story.

Everything you have in your home has come from ‘somewhere’ for ‘some reason’. Pay attention to ‘how’ things are acquired, ‘what’ they mean to you, and ‘why’ they remain.

Simply put, the story is all in the details.

When you understand the ‘how’, ‘what’ and ‘why’ for the pieces in your home, you are able to see each piece for what it is. And this is when you will know whether the ‘reason’ for the piece is ‘right’ for you.

No matter what, a story will unfold. It’s up to you how it’s told.

So why this post? I just read a great blog post by Jenny from A Little Green Notebook called ‘Are We Overexposed to Design?‘ I think Jenny has hit on something very real, and based on the endless comments from her readers, they think so too. I urge you to read Jenny’s post so you can weigh in with your own thoughts.

My thoughts…

As professionals in the very dynamic world of interior spaces, we help our clients tell their story in their space… piece by piece, room by room, chapter by chapter. How that story unfolds depends on our own ability to translate our client’s personality into their space. So make sure you surround yourself with things that are meaningful to you, and that make you feel good. If you keep things that grind at you, it’s time to ask yourself why. Gather together all the pieces that have a ‘right reason’ in answer to the ‘how’, ‘what’ and ‘why’ they’re in your space. Let the rest go. Who knows, what you let go today may become part of somebody else’s story tomorrow.

It’s our job to put memories in motion through the use of props (our client’s belongings), and create a motion picture (a visual story in a setting) starring our client. Anything added to enhance the setting or the scene is no different than an ‘extra’ on a set… nice to have for a finishing touch, but not the key feature.

Great spaces are not about great expenditures. They may or may not incorporate the latest trend, style, colour, or design, but ultimately a remarkable space is soulful and purposeful… for you. How we get there is built on the foundation of what matters to you.

  • Hello, my dear friend!

You’re so right. Our homes need to feel that is shaped by us, with our story, our taste and our dreams. It should be almost like a mirror of our personality.

You did a fantastic job here. I’m impressed with this post, Sheila.

Have a great day, my friend!
