Tread Confidently!

Hardwood stairs are stunning, beautiful in every aspect, but also come with their own set of challenges. Simply put, they must be navigated with caution. It’s so easy for a foot to slip on the wood’s smooth surface, and when you have children this is a safety concern. In fact, it’s a concern for all ages as well as for pets.

Can you imagine a tumble down this set of stairs?

So when I came across this photo on Remodelaholic’s site in a post by Tracie from Cleverly Inspired

…I was inspired! I’ve always felt torn between the aesthetic of hardwood stairs vs. the safety of carpet on the treads. I’ve never been that keen on the look of carpeted stairs, but that’s maybe because I haven’t seen carpet treads quite like these. They are from Natural Area Rugs, and I was impressed with the number of options you have to choose from. The treads are available in 13 binding colours and 37 weave materials. Here’s an example of ‘Studio’ weave with ‘Fudge’ for the binding colour… but it’s really worth looking at all the choices for yourself.

I know there are lots of different ways you can deal with hardwood stairs, but I like these carpet treads because they are made from natural fibres (Sisal, Seagrass, Mountain Grass, Wool), and they are easy to install. It is recommended that you use “Intertape” double-sided heavy duty carpet tape for a non-permanent installation, but for permanent installation you should use carpet nails or tacks and/or glue. For installation instructions click here.

Another way to reduce slipping on hardwood treads is to install grip guard stips.

This set of stairs has used grip guard strips, and if you don’t mind the look of them they are a great option to consider.

Now for some amazing staircases… I couldn’t resist including them, just for fun!

I have to say, I think carpet treads would detract from the architecture of most, if not all of these sets of stairs. What do you think? Which set of stairs is your favorite? And do you like the carpet treads?

  1. Hmmmm. I’m torn. I’ve never put a runner on my stairs because I just think it is too pretty without one. But I think those tiny stair rugs are actually a good solution because you can use them temporarily (i.e., while your kids are learning to walk up and down the stairs, etc.) and then take them down without ruining your hardwoods. Or so it seems.

    1. I’m so with you Traci – I just love the look of hardwood stairs, and it feels like a crime to cover them up. If I went with these carpet treads I would draw the line at nailing them down. I’d give the double-sided carpet tape a good go, and if that really didn’t work I’m not so sure the carpet treads would win! πŸ™‚

  2. So many good pictures! Agree with Traci, the little carpets seem like a better temp solution! All the Floating stairs are amazing! Oh well one day I’ll install them! Thanks for sharing!
